Not Micky D's week

This is not a good week for Kansas City's Ronald McDonald impersonators. (My dream job when I was 10.) Two days ago, a fire engulfed the McDonald's at 95th and Mission Road in Leawood, sometime around 8:30 a.m. I drove past the scene 11 hours later and there were still two firetrucks and the fire marshal's SUV there. Firemen were carrying fans in and out.

There's been no report on what caused the fire, but I noticed some work being done inside along with a sign saying "Excuse our mess: remodel in progress." The remodel mainly concerned the dining room, though, and a neighbor who had driven by the scene as the firefighters were putting out the fire said it looked as if they were focused around the kitchen area, which faces Mission Road.

It feels weird to admit it, but that felt like my McDonald's in a sense. I had some good times there in high school. My favorite second-grade teacher, Ms. Soukup, took me there for a special lunch in elementary school, and until this past weekend my grandparents still ate there every Sunday morning after church.

I also have one vivid memory about the other area McDonald's that closed this week. Hot Blog on a Stick noticed that the McDonald's in Downtown's City Square food court has "closed its doors for good." During lunch one day I walked the four blocks from my then-office to the City Square food court, only to discover that Bumblefish was out of my favorite sushi roll. I decided to give the McDonald's a try, ordered a chicken sandwich to go and took the bag to my office. Back at my cubicle, I opened the bag. Between my two buns slathered in mayo (I'd ordered it without) was some lettuce and a tomato. No chicken.

Apparently, I'm not the only McDonald's customer who's had this problem. I didn't call to complain or return it. I took it as a sign not to eat at McDonald's and let it be.
