Do you know what I had for dinner last night?
Tonight I plan on having pork. Tomorrow, maybe bacon, pork and ham. I have no qualms about this because, except for hurting my arteries, no harm can come from eating pork. "Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products." That's the CDC talking, not me.
But notice the CDC didn't say anything about drinking pork products. Probably because it doesn't think anyone is crazy enough to, but yes, there are several recipes for bacon-infused spirits, and since alcohol will kill anything (mainly good judgment), its safe to say these drinks are OK.
As an economist once said, a crisis is a terrible thing to waste, so I knew it was only a matter of time before some enterprising bartender creating a swine flu shot.
Turns out I was wrong. Somebody created an entire swine flu cocktail.
The recipe is as follows:
1 shot reposado or anejo tequila
1 shot bacon-infused bourbon
1/2 shot limoncello or juice of 1/4 muddled lemon
Shake with ice, strain and serve neat or on the rocks. Garnish with three blueberries on a spear (superfruits!)
The cocktail's creator Robert Haynes-Peterson warns not to share glasses with anyone and to use a straw if trying to drink from a surgical mask.
As
for how to create bacon-infused bourbon, it's a simple process.
You simply fry several slices of high-quality bacon and save the drippings.
Then pour the bourbon into a glass container with a wide mouth (you'll
see why in a moment) and then, using a strainer, pour in one or two
ounces of bacon drippings. You can either add chopped bacon to the
bourbon or,if you don't want chunks in your drink (most people don't),
eat the bacon. Let that sit out for a workday, and when you get home,
put it in the freezer. Leave it over night and the next morning the
bacon fat will have solidified on-top. By using a wide top, it's easy
to remove it with a spoon. Wallah! Bacon-infused bourbon.
That is, if you survive swine flu long enough to make it to the next morning.
