It takes some time to make a good batch of chili and that's why the Lenexa Chili Challenge starts on Friday night at 5 p.m. More than 100 teams are expected to compete in this year's event, with the contest in Old Town Lenexa (corner of Sante Fe Trail Drive and Plfumm) starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and winners being crowned at 4 p.m. Admission is $2 and there's a chili hotline if you need more information -- 913-541-8592.
Don't know your favorite beer? You can find one among the offerings from 70 breweries at the third annual KC Beerfest on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Legends at Village West. Our recommendation: Make a beeline for imports Hitachino and Black Sheep Ale. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
You don't only have to drink beer this weekend. The Well in Waldo earned The Pitch's Readers' Choice for Best New Bar and part of that might have to do with a budget-friendly happy hour between 3 and 6 p.m. every day. Domestic bottles are $3, cocktails are $4, and wine is $5. So decide how classy your drink needs to be and get over to The Well.
The brightest candles burn the quickest -- the Kansas City Renaissance Festival has come to its last weekend in Bonner Springs. Saturday and Sunday are the final days for you to get a turkey leg and dream of a time when cholesterol didn't exist.
The Maple Leaf isn't just for Canada. Baldwin City, Kansas, has been celebrating the Maple Leaf Festival for 52 years. The event this Saturday and Sunday is free, although you should partake of the homemade pies and funnel cake before trying out the moon bounce.
It's hard to turn down barbecue, and even harder when it's for a good cause. This Sunday is a benefit show and barbecue for musician Mike Roark, who needs help paying medical bills after being diagnosed with mantle cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma earlier this year. The event runs from 3 to 9 p.m. at Unity Temple on the Plaza.
