I'll have to give City-Bluz an honorable mention here. He took a look at this week's "Where Is It?" photo and guessed that it was the two-year-old Hawg Shed Bar-B-Que in Buckner, Missouri.

Actually City-Bluz, it's the new, three-week-old Hawg Shed Bar-B-Que in Lexington, Missouri. I ate there last week and it was delicious. The ribs not so great, but the brisket and barbecued chicken were first-rate. The baked beans were rich with molasses and I ate a whole basket of deep-fried okra. And you can't beat the prices!

Yes, this is the window of a restaurant. Get your mind out of the gutter! Now just where is it?

Fat City commenter Heatherkay was a busy bee all right. She posted the same comment -- and the right answer -- three times! What a honey! And yes Heatherkay, the correct answer was the old Busy Bee Cafe location on 18th Street, just east of Grinders and the Pi Gallery. There hasn't been a restaurant in this venue for many years, but I agree, it would be a great hipster hangout.

No, it's not the one in Dubuque, Iowa, or the one in Poughkeepsie, New York. It's not even the one in Atlanta or Pearland, Texas. It's right here in the city that was almost Possum Trot.

Do you know where this joint is?

A tip o' the cap (one of my favorite expressions from the long-forgotten Cappy Dick comic strip -- which offered weekly contests that I never won!) to that observant blogger Dan who correctly guessed that the copper-hooded fireplace was in the dining room of the Classic Cup Cafe on the Country Club Plaza. This contest is a lot more fun than Cappy Dick's, although we don't give away zippered pencil cases or slot-car racing sets like he did, darn it!

I ate at the Cup last week and saw a man sitting across the dining room who looked just like Cappy Dick. Or, in this case, Cuppy Dick?

Yesterday was the first day of fall, the beginning of the autumn equinox. It won’t be too long before the gas logs in this attractive copper-hooded fireplace will be aflame, providing a warm refuge against the chilly winds of November and December. Do you know which local restaurant boasts this happy hearth?

Where%20Is%20It%2C%20McClain%27s%20Bakery.jpg

This particular "Where Is It?" was almost too easy, but what the hell, here's special thanks to commenters Bill and Andrea who made correct guesses. I had been craving a flaky Danish pastry from the venerable McLain's Bakery at 7422 Wornall Road, and the window display was festive enough that I couldn't resist the impulse to photograph it.

What do I like the most about McLain's? Well, it smells like a bakery: a delectably sweet, yeasty fragrance. And it looks like an old-fashioned bakery, post World War II vintage, not unlike my favorite bake shop in my hometown, Taylor's Bakery. I never leave Indianapolis without stopping into Taylor's for a crisp white bag filled with pastries, which I polish off on the way to the airport.

I wish I could find other bakeries in the metro that are anything like these two timeless classics.

If you can't have a real Barbie birthday cake, damn it, would you be willing to accept a cake baked and frosted with a Barbie-style doll (one of those cheap 11-and-a-half inch fashion dolls found at discount shops and craft stores)? Hey, if the cake is good and the candles don't melt the doll's limp Dynel hair, who cares?

This window display won't win any awards for creativity, but that not-really-Barbie cake is a sexy confectionary siren, luring unsuspecting patrons into the shop to buy chewy cookies, thickly iced brownies and pineapple sweet rolls.

It doesn't look like much from the outside (or even from the inside, come to think of it), but Aloha Chopstix Chinese Restaurant at 4316 Rainbow Boulevard has its devotees, including a friend of mine who gets intense cravings for a couple of the inexpensive house specialties here, like Dong Ting Shrimp ("Shrimp marinated in egg white and gently sauteed with broccoli and Chinese vegetables") and the "Sizzling Plate" (shrimp, scallops, beef, chicken and pork served on a sizzling hot platter). Most of the lunch specials are priced at less than five bucks.

Now that the trend for Chinese restaurants is to be sleek, modern and stylish like the new Mandarinism or the sexy Bo Lings location in the City Market, it’s getting harder to find those good old dumpy but comfortable and cheap Chinese storefront restaurants. You know the kind, with the lunch buffet of unrecognizable but edible items in gloppy-looking cornstarch-based sauces and the paper "Chinese Zodiac" placemats. But if you look hard enough, those classic restaurants still exist – and they still serve Pu Pu Platters and Egg Foo Young!

Do you know where this one is?

Answer: The Humdinger Drive-In at 2504 E. 9th Street, between Wabash and Prospect.

When the Humdinger opened in 1962, Kansas City was going through a serious drive-in craze. There were already 65 local drive-ins listed in the 1960 City Directory, including the iconic Winstead’s near the Country Club Plaza (which is still doing great business) and a few blocks away, just over Brush Creek, the equally popular circular Sidney’s Drive-In, which was razed a hell of a long time ago.

Barely a handful of those 1960s drive-ins have survived, but the Humdinger (which doesn’t offer carhop service like Mugs Up in Independence) is even more amazing when you consider its huge menu: cheeseburgers, taco burgers, tacos and burritos, barbecue sandwiches, fried shrimp, pork tenderloins, slices of freshly-baked cakes (a lady on the night shift makes them) and breakfast served all day. The morning menu is limited, though: biscuits and gravy or one of the eight Big Kahuna sandwiches (named for the ultimate movie star Big Kahuna) served on a hoagie bun with two fried eggs, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, grilled onion and hot sauce. It’s kind of messy to eat in the car, but there’s no seating at the Humdinger.

The Humdinger is open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. until after midnight on Friday and Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.

In the 1959 movie Gidget, future Academy Award-winning actor Cliff Robertson played the sexy, tan Big Kahuna, the surfer king of Malibu Beach. The “Big Kahuna Sand” at this Kansas City location has nothing to do with the soft stuff that gets kicked up at the ocean, but an abbreviation for something good to eat.
