Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Live Earth reached some people who apparently didn’t know there was an environmental crisis going on. But what I couldn’t fathom, reading Lisa Gutierrez’s “Green Living” column in this morning’s Star, was how a person could get to be a reporter for a major metropolitan newspaper – even a fluffy lifestyle features reporter for the FYI section – and still be so clueless about Environmental Issues 101.
It’s one thing to admit not doing much to help solve the environmental crisis; it’s quite another to go around the house removing eco-friendly compact fluorescent light bulbs just because you don’t like the glow. I mean, to not know there are simple things one can do to ease the crisis, a person would have to ignore newspaper reports over the past, oh, several decades. But Lisa Gutierrez actually works for a newspaper!
Along with Gutierrez’s column this morning, the paper called for readers to join its new Green Team project. “Starting this fall, we’ll give ourselves — and you — a green living project every week,” the editors wrote. “Things like switching to local milk or carrying reusable bags to the store. You’ll report back to us on how your challenge went. And, oh, yes, there’ll be prizes.” Let’s just hope that project works better than Gutierrez’s “Team Lisa” effort, in which the heavyweights who banded together to lose weight mostly just stayed fat. – C.J.
