  • Anti-Abortion Protester Isn't Broke After All

    Sat Nov 17, 2007 at 06:44:53 AM

The truth trucks are some expensive hardware.

Last month, Operation Rescue’s Troy Newman sent out a frantic fund-raising e-mail declaring his anti-abortion group “FLAT BROKE!!!” In all caps, Newman wrote that Operation Rescue was “$22,000 IN THE RED” and needed $43,000 in 10 days or “PLANNED PARENTHOOD COULD WEASEL OUT OF THESE 107 CHARGES.” How Planned Parenthood could “weasel” out of criminal charges brought by the nation’s leading abortion opponent – Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline – wasn’t clear. We called Newman to find out.

How’d you get $22,000 in the red?
By overspending. We’re back in the positive now. I do the projects that are necessary and worry about the details later. We have enough money in our savings account to cover that, and so it isn’t a problem. But we need to replenish our war chest to get back in the fight.

So you had the money in savings?
My accountant called me and told me we were upside down, what should we do? I said take it out of the savings account.

Troy NewmanWhat were some of the projects you were working on?
I just purchased another truth truck. It’s our 10th truck. We’re also helping to expose some dirty abortionists around the country and helping file reports against their medical records. We have our project against the Democratic National Convention in Denver. We’re also working on another lawsuit, which I can’t tell you [about]. We also have a series of radio ads that we’re scheduling. We also have television spots, which we’re producing. We’re also in the midst of our office remodel – the abortion clinic that we purchased and threw out the bums that were operating there.

So you aren’t in any danger of going under?
No, I trust God. We’ve always lived week-to-week. Sometimes, at best, month-to-month. But the Lord has always been faithful to supply all of our needs. The pro-life community has always been extremely generous in helping us meet all our goals and expectations. I’m not in debt in any way, other than our monthly obligation.

You wrote that you needed $43,000 or else Planned Parenthood could “weasel out” of the criminal charges. How could they weasel out of the charges?
They’re a strong lobbying group, and they have a lot of influence in Kansas politics, Kansas media, The Pitch even. And we’re going to combat that with our own media campaign and aggressive e-mail campaign. We’re not going to give them any wiggle room. They may attack the credibility of Phill Kline, but I think that his integrity is impeccable. And I believe it will be proven when the grand jury is seated, and they hand down even more indictments.

Your status as a charity was revoked in September 2006?
They say it was revoked. We gave it back. We had long debates with the IRS agent and attorneys, and they came to the opinion that I couldn’t say that John Kerry was a baby-killing hypocrite. In my mind, that’s called freedom of speech. But if you’re a non-profit, they say you can’t say that. So I said, take your 501(c)3 and put it some place where the sun doesn’t shine.

Has handing over that charity status hurt your ability to raise money?
No, I think it has helped us. We’re no longer silenced in any way. We tell the truth. Look, we’re broke. If you’d like to support our efforts, here’s where to send the money.

But you said you had that money in the savings account?
Where are you going with this? What does the letter say?

    It says you’re broke.
Yeah. Do you take money out of your savings account, your retirement plan, your 401k or whatever because you need to pay your car payment? Only in an emergency, right? That’s exactly what it was. You have a savings account for emergencies only or for some other project. And so I had to divert funds from one project to pay our normal operating expenses.

What tripped me up was you saying you had the money, but the e-mail said you’re $22,000 in the red.
Right. We have our operating expenses, our normal operating income, and when that gets depleted to zero you either start bouncing checks or you scramble and you put the funds in there. And that’s what we had to do.

So what? The babykillers at Planned Parenthood and all the pro-abortion babykilling Democrats are not broke either, yet they whine for money all the time.
SAY THIS PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I am a sinner and am headed to eternal hell because of my sins. I believe you died on the cross to take away my sins and to take me to heaven. Jesus, I ask you now to come into my heart and take away my sins and give me eternal life.

An organization such as Operation Rescue must maintain a reserve or savings, to ride the roller coaster during lean times. Their activities now are on a higher level than at other times, so expenses are higher.

A depletion of the general fund, does require use of reserves, but those reserves must be replenished. The general fund is broke, so why pick on Newman for the fund raising approach. Where's the beef????

Operation Rescue has proven to be responsible in terms of raising money, and how the funds are used, year after year.

    Justin Kendall's conscience says:

The beef is inside Justin Kendall's own mind.

He's one of those beatnik type libs who doesn't understand the concept of morality except as defined by himself.

Sadly, he doesn't see the problem with that.

Gee, everyone gets to decide for themselves what morality is.

And what if I say it's moral to pinch a loaf off in Kendall's mouth. How do you like that, beatnik boy?

Yeah! A Cleveland Baked Potato right in Justin Kendall's mouth! Eat it, Justin!

    Mmmmmm.

    Jose says:

Why is it the issue of abortion turns Christians into hatemongers? Where in the teachings of Jesus did he say to despise the people who disagree with you?

    Average Joe says:

You would think a god-fearing anti-abortionist wouldn't try to divert people's judgment in regards to opening their pockets.
The e-mail is definitely misleading in regards to his "operation's" finances.

    Lonnie says:

Troy, I think Jesus would want you to be a better fiscal manager of your money. Jesus might also want you to donate your remaining funds to a inner city headstart program. When you toalk to Jesus what does he say - or can't you hear him with through all the other voices in your head?

    Feminist1 says:

As if those "Truth" trucks are such a great way to spend money and not a waste of resources in every way, not to mention national resources. I mean really, WWJD?
I think JC would be more environmentally aware! Of course, I also think he'd be all for condoms and birth control too!

    lifelover says:

Life is a series of choices. Choosing choice doesn't mean you don't want to choose life, but sometimes you only get to choose what's best for you at the time. I wish we could make men who "choose life" carry a baby to term and then have to give it up for adoption. Then see what they say. Or get that man pregnant because of rape then keep the child and have to deal with a health care system that doesn't care. Over 6000 children die each year in automobile accidents, many of them due to underage drinking. Do you think all of them are children of "pro-abortion baby killers"? I think not. Deal with reality people. Death happens. We have the ability to choose how it happens. God or JC has nothing to do with it.

    Pamela says:

Have any of you anti-choicers looked up the services Planned Parenthood provides other than abortion? Without those services (women's health, birth control, STD screening, general reproductive health exams) there would be MORE abortions.

I think both sides can agree that the fewer abortions the better, but you anti-choice Christians-on-Sunday do NOT care about women or the health of women. In case you haven't notices, women are PEOPLE.

    sillygirl says:

Our local PP affiliate spent $60,000 on fundraising and $175,000 to MorganStanley to manage over $23,000,000 in securties assets. Their annual operating budget is $6,000,000 half of which comes from taxpayers.

You know they are working the fundraising angle because they spent $60,000 on a professional fundraiser.

That is just one PP affiliate. PP has tons of cash.

Unfortunately, I don't think that there is anything illegal with it. Aside from it seeming a little amoral for an organization that places its clout on being a morally upstanding organization. Doesn't make me feel that they are too moral if they are willing to use deceptive fundraising tactics like this..

Oh and silly girl, I think your stats are a little skewed.

    immoral* not amoral...

    Feminist and reasonable says:

    Abortion or not.

    Is sperm life or not?
Is a human egg life or not?
Is a fetus life or not?
Is an embryo life or not?
Is a born baby life or not?

Which of that is life and which is not? One could also call masturbating teenagers "babykillers" because they are wasting sperm.
Does one call menstruating women "babykillers" because they are not pregnant and therefore losing one egg a month?

The question is: where do you draw the line.

One should accept that there are differences in sperm, egg, fetus, embry and born baby.

And I would leave it to biologists and doctors to decide which is life and which is not.

I am just sure of one thing: birth control (contraceptives) are a good thing. Because otherwise every woman would become pregnant around 15 times in her life and every husband would get less sex because women who have just given birth have to be more careful till everything is healed. And not to speak about all the children that would be born. Can you imagine to afford a new car when you have 15 children to feed?

    Kate says:

    Pamela:

In case you haven't "notices," babies are people, too - or could be, anyway, if we gave them a chance. A woman's health isn't destroyed by having a baby. And if it is, maybe she should be a little more careful before having sloppy sex. Abortion is the easy way out, and it's wrong.
