The Star Sends Jobs to India

Thu May 15, 2008 at 12:24:45 PM

By ERIC BARTON

Few people would've called The Kansas City Star's former owner, Knight Ridder, a bastion of great journalism. But one thing Knight Ridder didn't do is send Kansas City jobs overseas.

The Star's current overlord, McClatchy, is firing nine employees in Kansas City and sending the jobs to India. The Star broke the news today about the layoffs in a brief on the second page of the business section. The article says that Star President and Publisher Mark Zieman sent a memo to employees indicating that nine people who do advertising production work would lose their jobs. The work will be sent to Infosys Technologies in Bangalore, India.

McClatchy has been outsourcing advertising production work overseas at many of its papers. And there have been rumors for months within the Star's offices that such a move would be likely here.

McClatchy treasurer Elaine Lintecum, who's listed on the company's Web site as a media contact, declined to comment for The Pitch. She said, "I recommend that you call The Kansas City Star," before abruptly hanging up.

New Star Publisher Mark Zieman and Jennifer Kisser, who heads the advertising services department, did not immediately return a phone call from The Pitch.

Silly boy!

That's because the job of actually responding to reporters outside of The Star was also outsourced!

Just the kind of move to make middle America come back to newspaper reading! Capital move, McClatchy!

sight_beyond_sight says:

This is Extremist Capitalist Terrorism.

The Greedy McClatchy extremist capitalists, like so many corporations, get to save at least 10$/hour per person when they pay the Indians 2$ per hour instead of paying the Americans at least 12$ per hour.

Capitalism in your face.

My best friend that has worked there for 8 years and has given her all while being their biggest supporter.

They were told their last day would be in July BUT before she goes, she has to train her replacement that is going to be flown in. To top it all off - you won't give a letter of recommendation to find another job!

This is so wrong and unpatriotic! Can't wait until my job is outsourced at 15 cents and hour to someone in India and I get to worry about how I will pay rent or eat.

Ivis says:

Class act. First we get rid of the blue collar jobs, now we're hitting the white collars hard. Why isn't American industry protecting our jobs, working out solutions instead of taking the food out of our mouths?

Funny I thought this was the land of opportunity for us, not for foreigners. And that's not a racist remark. Charity begins at home.

Crystal says:

I find it appalling, especially as an advertiser in The Star, that a daily newspaper that is competing with the internet is sending jobs to a country that is in a time zone 12 hours away. What kind of service am I going to get? I'm sure it will be similar to my cell phone company's idea of customer service, seeing as all of those jobs have already been outsourced.

I am cancelling my subscription as well, the crosswords suck now anyway.

M says:

Wow! What a bunch of @#$%!!! Where is the logical thinking here folks? What the eff does an individual from India know about KC?!

Jeff says:

This just in! The Kansas City Star changes its primary color of patriotic blue to the turn-coat colors of orange and green.

A big thanks to The Star for making KC a lot less American.

V says:

There are some wonderful people in department. I just hope KC has the ability to employ all of them.

Annie says:

we've spread the word to NYC folks!

I dread the day that Skip Slyester is outsourced.

youvegottobekiddingme says:

"All people are equal"....check.
"give me your tired, hungry, poor"....check.
"outsource all your jobs and create a horribly unstable economic climate".... ummmm no.

I'm not a racist, I'm an American that believes in his countrymen. And I believe that they should "keep" and be compensated properly for the jobs they do. Not cheap foreign labor fattening the pocket books of the facist corpoarate pigs. Seriously, what are they thinking? That corporations taking jobs away and politicians handing a $600 stimulus check is going to solve economic distress. I say, no more outsourcing, let these other countries handle their own affairs. I'd like to see us generate an impenatrable economy here before we strengthen someone elses.

More importantly, how long are "we the people of the united states of america" going to sit back and take it?

Natalie says:

Unbelievable! I am completely shocked that the KC star would outsource these jobs to India! This is a local newspaper that should employ local Kansas-citizens. Next thing we know they will start forecasting our weather!

These are very talented employees that deserve better than this.

I have been an avid reader of the KC star everyday. Not anymore…

Junk.

Kamin says:

By enabling this type of business practice, we are slowing dividing the U.S. into 2 groups of people, the poor, and the super rich (i.e. upper management & CEO status) - maybe we should outsource a few CEO's positions and see what happens!

Could someone please share a link to an online version of this story on the Star's website? Or scan the article and post the image?

I'm not questioning whether this is true or not, but I'd like to read the original source for myself...

Since when are the people of India known
for their graphic design and creative talents?
And for a "hometown" newspaper of all things!
How dare these corporate execs ask their American employees to sit down and train
these people to take their job!
Corporate America is completely out-of-control GREEDY!
Maybe as they outsource more jobs at the
Star, they can re-name our paper:
"The Kansas City Star via Bombay"

dosomethingaboutit says:

I say everyone that has posted a remark on here actually go one step further and email, call, or write both the editor at the Star, as well as your local aldermen/councilman. I, for one, have not been a subscriber to The Star for a long time, but sporadically use the online edition. That, too, will now cease.
Let's not stand for this s***!

Are you people kidding me??? First, ask the almighty "Pitch" where it gets printed? THE STAR!!! Outsourcing is happening everywhere! Do you think the Pitch retrained their pressmen as reporters and let them keep their jobs? Um NO!
Besides, you all are talking about these "poor graphic artists" when they are not outsourcing everyone in the department, only the ones that aren't doing their jobs and can be replaced by people, in another country, that don't "know anything about KC!"

Let's see you pay $5 more for your newspaper just so someone can keep their job, let's see you pay EVEN MORE for advertising for a full-color ad, just so someone here can take an extra hour lunch or buy an even newer car.

If these people were doing their job they COULDN'T be outsourced! AND if they are good at their jobs they will have no problem finding new, maybe even better, JOBS! Gee, someone might even have to start earning a living again...even us.

While you are bashing The KC Star, why not call the Pitch, The Sun, The Levenworth newspaper, or even the Gardner or Spring Hill newspapers (for a really small town newspaper) and ask them how much work they do in house!

It doesn't matter if you outsource to across town or across the big pond, it is still outsourcing and it will continue until we don't have a problem with paying too much for a product while making less money!

Last, for you business owners, why not start at "home" by lower your prices so we don't have to find jobs that others can offer at a lower price? I could use yet another new car, mine is almost two years old...B

Emet says:

All companies who outsource American jobs are TRAITORS, AND SHOULD BE TRIED AND SHOT!!!

Sending our country to ruin, AND ALL FOR A damn BUCK they soon won't have anything to spend it on. SAD.

So, get the hell out of Kansas City McClatchy!!! You are Traitor SCUM!!!!

in the know says:

anonymous: the Pitch never had pressman fyi. Check yourself before you wreck yourself!

Jerrry says:

I have forwarded this information regerding the Star's action regarding outsourcing jobs to India to Kevin O'Neill at the Labor Beacon. Perhaps he can make workers aware of what the Star has done and give them some publicity for their actions. I have also forwarded this info to my Union.

Get Real says:

This is for Annie, your so called friend that put in her all. lol I'm pretty sure I know who your talking about and she's only put in her all to make sure she doesn't have to do anything. She sabotaged herself by eliminating everything useful from her department. Granted it sucks that she is possibly loosing her job, but be real. Your only losing your job if you suck at what you do and don't want to learn. I personally don't work there anymore, but I did and you were useless also. If you two didn't know what everyone thought about you, then your heads were in the clouds. I have to agree that McClatcy was the worst thing to come to the star since the depression. I personally won't give them anymore of my money. I own my own business and won't be advertising with them anymore. My money is going to direct mail and radio now. Cancelled my subscription too. So anyway, if your going to blog something make sure your creditable to begin with.

Annie says:

Ah - Get Real is it?

For your information - the Star begged my friend to reapply and stay - but she has morals an won't work for a company that has stabbed her in the back.

& YOU have no idea how much work we actually did - don't kid yourself and lie to just to attack us.

What did we ever do to you? Why don't you go get a life and make friends? Then you might actually be fulfilled enough with your life that you won't feel the need to pick on other people.

kamin says:

Hey GET REAL...I know for a fact that Annie is now an editor. What have you accomplished lately except insult people and do it anonymously. Also, I know that you didn't do a good job at the STAR...oh wait, I really don't know that - DO I, sorry.

Eric Barton says:

We'd like to follow up this story. If anybody here knows of someone laid off during the Star's outsourcing, please send them my e-mail: eric.barton@pitch.com.
