  • Gladys Skinner at the City Market

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love it when women wear hats out in public. One of my dreams in life is to buy a really outlandish hat in London to wear to some quintessential British event, like this. Or a more laid-back hat for an occasion like this. Until we Americans adopt a hatcentric culture, though, I’ll just enjoy the random hat sightings around town. Like the lovely green number pictured above, atop Gladys Skinner’s head.

Last week, I was hanging out at the City Market when I spotted Gladys and her sister and their friend picking out produce. Her cheerful green outfit made her stand out from the rest of the office-worker-lunchtime crowd that flocked to the City Market. It also helped brighten up a cloudy, slightly humid day. The three ladies were in town from New York for the Shriners convention. Gladys proudly proclaimed that she lives in Yonkers, where she works part-time in a rehab center for mothers who are recovering from alcohol and drugs. When I asked her age, she said, “I’m not ashamed; thank God I made it this far. I’m 70.”

I asked Gladys what inspired her to don a hat, and she replied in a rush of words: “I just put it on. I thought it was going to be sunny. I put my little hat on; fortunately, it matched my green shirt and my black pants. And you think I’m stylishly dressed. Thank you!”
