The National Basketball Association returns to Kansas City tonight at 7 p.m., when Portland and Atlanta play an exhibition game at the Sprint Center.
Kansas City lost its NBA franchise in 1985. The league allowed the Kings to move to Sacramento after a 31-51 season, a year KC finished last in the league in attendance. The box score (above) indicates that a crowd of 11,371 watched the Kings play the final game in the West Bottoms.
Fans who remember the Kings can officially feel old. Reggie Theus, who averaged 16.4 points a game as a King during the 1984-'85 season, now coaches the team. The eldest son of former Kings guard Larry Drew, who attended Wyandotte High School and Mizzou before being drafted in 1980, is a freshman on North Carolina's basketball team.
