Living on more than bread alone
By PETER RUGG
We’ve told you about Pastor Eric Williams of the Calvary Temple Baptist Church twice in the last two years. He was one of the first ministers willing to openly discuss HIV infection rates, and he's one of the driving forces behind the week of prayer for victims of the virus here in Kansas City. Now his church is starting another health project to help people, especially children, get access to the same tools that keep their wealthier peers from going to the doctor with a case of diabetes.

The Calvary Community Wellness Center opens 10 a.m. Saturday at 3002 Holmes. The Center is designed to provide a safe place for exercise with fitness equipment, fitness assessments and health screenings and education about good nutrition. It’ll be available for all ages. The center’s goal is to reduce occurrence of obesity and chronic disease in the African-American community.
The grand opening will include class demonstrations for cardio-boxing, Pilates, Zumba and breathing and stretching. There will also be choir performances and healthy snacks available, along with tours of the 10,000-square-foot facility and demonstrations on use of the equipment. You can also get a health screening, so you’ll know what potential health problems you might be facing.
Truman Medical Centers is collaborating with the project to provide programs tailored to children’s health, nutrition, diabetes and obesity. The Center itself is a project of the Calvary Community Outreach Network, an arm of the church.
