  • Google breathes Life into old KC

Our blog brother in Dallas, Unfair Park, points out that Life magazine's photo archives are now a Google search away.

This includes a couple hundred beautiful black-and-white (and some color) shots of a bygone KC, during floods, construction, elections and crime. Here's the time machine link to old Kansas City. You can buy framed versions of the photos from $79.99 to $109.99.

I used this 1960s-ish b&w photo (credit: Missouri Valley Special Collections, Kansas City Library) for the back cover of my recently published book set in Kansas City.

    DLC says:

Yes, the Library's special collections site at http://kchistory.org is a great source for photos. But the Life photos are really great- and they have Raquel Welch in a Roller Derby outfit

    Justin Kendall says:

DLC, I love the KC Bomber photo. I was really tempted to use it. Should have. Sweet regret.

MoJo, the fountain photo is sweet.

    MoJo says:

Justin, isn't it? The old Gerhardt Furs? I remember that when I was very small, walking around the Plaza at Christmastime.

IMO, the photographer distilled the best of KC (and the best of what I love about it) to one fine moment in time.

    Justin Kendall says:

MoJo, I just enlarged the photo. Yep, Gerhardt Furs is in the backdrop. Cool shot.

    MoJo says:

Hey, do you remember the old Harzfeld's building downtown, where at Christmas, they'd have those big mechanical dolls all dressed up and showcased in Dickensian-type clothes?

    Justin Kendall says:

MoJo, I don't because I moved here about four years ago.
