  • The cheesiest holiday light display

    Thu Nov 27, 2008 at 09:00:19 AM

I usually hate it when people put up their holiday lights the second that Halloween is over. It's like, come on. We still have to slog through Thanksgiving first, so just hold off on your holiday displays until after the only pure, noncommercialized American holiday we have left.

But then I saw these lights at the corner of 103rd Street and Metcalf in Overland Park.

Mere photos can't capture the utter cheesoid fantasticness of this display. Vince & Associates, a clinical research firm specializing in sleep studies, has transformed its corner into a flashing forum of insomnia-inducing garishness. Epileptics should avoid the intersection at all costs.

Freestanding light structures shaped like gingerbread houses, toy soldiers and snowmen sit on its narrow lawn, alongside tinsel Christmas trees and real trees wrapped in strings of lights. Best of all, the light display on the building is synchronized to music. As a vinyl banner instructs, tune in to FM frequency 96.9 after dark and enjoy the show while listening to snippets of contempo hits. (For more, check out Vince's Web site).

It's terrible, and I love it. Oh, and happy Thanksgiving! -- By Jen Chen
