Start early: Join high-on-life Democrats to watch the swearing-in of President Obama and Vice President Biden at Nick and Jake's, 6830 West 135th Street (135th and Metcalf), at 10:30 a.m. RSVP to kenl1945@earthlink.net or call 913-901-9949.
The Gem Theater (1615 East 18th Street) also kicks the festivities off at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $35, and the event features a color guard, a live choir and band, a multimedia presentation, and, of course, refreshments. Keep the Red Bull coming -- this event goes till 12:30 a.m. Tickets via this link.
Be fancy: The Juke House Inaugural Party at the KC Blues and Jazz Juke House (1700 East 18th Street) costs $20 and features a dinner buffet and champagne toast. It starts at 5 p.m. Cocktail attire and RSVP required. Call 816-472-0013.
The Power & Light District goes off at 9 p.m. on "the Live! block," which we assume is the central area with the screen and stage. Cordish will then control the weather, promising, "As evening falls, the KC Live Block canopy will illuminate the evening sky with red, white and blue lightning." Perhaps they'll suspend the racist dress code in favor of inclusiveness? Nah.
Californos (4124 Pennsylvania in Westport) offers free appetizers until 7 p.m. and special prices on uniquely concocted libations available only for this evening.
The party at the Czar Bar, including DJ Sike Style (1531 Grand), starts at 9 p.m.
The Granada in Lawrence (1020 Massachusetts) throws a bash featuring bands the Dactyls, Noise FM, Andrew Morgan and Hidden Pictures. It starts at 7 p.m. and costs $5 at the door. They'll be showing replays of Obama's speeches and news coverage on the big screen.
