Segura announced The Daily Show gig on his blog in February and later blogged about shooting the skit.
I called the guys and asked how The Daily Show found them. Garcia told me that they got the call because of their ethnic talent agency, 385. They needed a few guys who could look like day laborers. Mandvi was doing a story about a guy in Excelsior Springs who watches the U.S.-Mexico border from his home computer. Watching the border gets really boring, ("It's kinda like watching empty fields," Segura said), so Mandvi wants to get a beer. But the border watcher doesn't want to leave his post -- even if it's thousands of miles from the actual border. So Mandvi hires a day laborer to fill in. Segura plays the day laborer.
How'd the border guard react to the guys playing day laborers?
"To everyone's surprise, he had a really great sense of humor," Segura said. "He was very nice, very charming."
I'll post the video when the show finally airs. Might be tonight. Or not.
I gotta tip my hat to my friend Jen Chen for passing on the info. Thanks, Jen!
