The Romaneks respond! Plus: See Romanek's UFO footage on ABC tonight!
| Stan Romanek |
A commenter identifying herself as Lisa Romanek, the wife of UFO-profiteer Stan Romanek, has posted a lengthy response to last week's cover story, "Close Encounter," about her husband's claims to have shot video footage of an alien peeping through his window.
I'm inclined to believe it's really Lisa Romanek. A "Lisa Romanek" has left similar responses on other posts and articles about her husband, and I've seen first-hand the gusto with which she'll jump into the family business.
Late into Stan's presentation at the Mysteries of the Universe Conference last July, an audience member asked if Stan would be willing to take a second polygraph test. (The results of the first: "significant reactions indicating deception.") Stan said he'd look forward to taking another, but Lisa shouted "No!" and dashed up from her seat to tell us all how her concern for her husband's health took precedence. I do not report this to make her look silly; at the time, it seemed charming.
In the comment, posted last Friday, Lisa Romanek defends Stan's writing and spelling ability -- a surprise since his alleged dyslexia is an important part of the Romanek case. She also dismisses my reporting as "one man's opinion," and accuses The Pitch and our commenters of having "hate-filled minds." That's well and good, and we respect her opinion.
Still, two of her assertions warrant a response.
This is an astonishing statement. Stan has become a celebrity in the UFO world by claiming first to have video of UFOs and later of nothing less than alien life. The back cover of his book claims "We are not alone ... and Stan Romanek can prove it." His Web site boasts, "The Stan Romanek case is possibly the most scientifically documented human/extraterrestrial encounters case in the world." Now, that "case" is just a "story"? How could Stan's "story" be true and then not be proof that ETs or UFOs are real? Is she suggesting that the Romanek's evidence need not be investigated?
This is disingenuous. In Romanek's self-written online report of his September 22, 2001, UFO sightings, he misspells the word "follow" as "fallow." In three other reports from his September 2001 sightings -- all anonymous but submitted to the National UFO Resource Center by Romanek himself -- "follow" is also misspelled. That's four instances, not one. Then there's a fifth "fallow" from the same batch of reports, this one by an author professing to have no knowledge of Romanek.
And, Christ, that's not even taking into account the two other online "fallows" I've recently turned up online from commenters defending Romanek. Perhaps most damning: One of those commenters offers the burst of insight that salvages one of Romanek's bits of evidence that hadn't panned out.
In other news, look for Stan Romanek tonight on ABC's news-related program Primetime. My big question before the broadcast: Will he find yet another excuse not to show the video he's been teasing since last summer?
Here's "Lisa Romanek"'s comment in full:
Hello everyone. I am Stan Romanek's wife. This is not the first time this "fallow" question has been raised, nor will it be the last I am sure. I wonder how many dislexic people ther are in this world? Do any of you know? Stan wrote a book for goodness sakes, have any of you? Becasue he misspelled follow once,is he now responsible for everyone else's spelling problems? when you pronounce it, it does sound like it should be spelled that way. Did you stop to think that maybe other people may have the same issue, or when they wrote the reports they were frightend. Of course not.Stan Romanek photo by Angela C. Bond
Now, as for Stan having a third grade spelling level, again, he just wrote a book, and it is doing amazingly well, for a dyslexic person who has trouble spelling he has never made a secret of his spelling or math problems. It is a disability, and I am ashamed of you all for being so hateful. As for what Stan does for a job, not that it is any of your business, nor will you care, but he is disabled from a sever blood sugar disorder. He has many doctors, that treat him, and NONE of them will allow him to return to work. The crazy part about it is that he was a healthy man, before this ET contact began. But again your hate filled minds can not accept that truth either can they!!
Stan and I are not doing this to prove that ETs are real, or even that UFO's are real. It is about telling Stans story, of what he has experienced, that is all. You are all supposed to be smart enough to make up your own minds about what you choose to beleive and not beleive. Are your minds so full of loathing for other people that you can not stop talking trash long enough to think for your selves,do you have to spend all of your time surfing the web in search of some piece of crap news here or there, that is based on one mans opinion, and not your own. I am appauled by the lack of compassion shown for my husband and thousands of others like him who are trying to deal with a terrifying experience, violations, fears, and then to be assaulted by thier peers.People like you are the casue of them all feeling like they have to hide the truth and remain isolated... No wonder the ETs are so afraid of us.I am afraid of us too.
