Chiefs rebooting without several Herm 'finds'

The Kansas City Chiefs reported for training camp last week without 16 players who suited up for the last game of the 2008 season.

The '08 Chiefs were a sorry bunch (record: 2-14), so turnover is to be expected. But it's worth remembering that former head coach Herm Edwards believed last year's club had made great progress.

Before the season's final game, Edwards said the roster rebuilding was mostly complete. "I'd say 85 percent of it is done now," he said at his weekly news conference, decked in his customary gray thermal. The comments surprised observers who had watched the '08 Chiefs struggle on offense and mount a pass rush that left opposing quarterbacks giggling.

The new regime at Arrowhead -- G.M. Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley -- clearly rejects the idea that the Chiefs had turned a corner amid all the ass-kickings.

Among those not making the trip to Wisconsin: defensive players Patrick Surtain, David Macklin, Oliver Celestin, Thomas Gafford, Rocky Boiman, Curtis Gatewood, Pat Thomas and Jason Babin. Backup quarterback Quinn Gray, receivers Will Franklin and Kevin Robinson and offensive linemen Andrew Carnahan and Adrian Jones are gone, too. (Tight end Tony Gonzalez was traded.)

A few of the discarded "85 percenters" have been invited to other teams' camps. Franklin's trying to catch on with the Oakland Raiders. Jones, a former Kansas Jayhawk, is with the Texans.

Sacked by Pioli, Edwards has migrated to ESPN. His emeritus status makes him eligible for beer commercials. In May came word that his epic "You play to the win game" speech will become a Coors Light spot.

Finally, a foundation worth building on.
