Brownback lies about cap-and-trade

U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback is spouting nonsense in an effort to denigrate a bill intended to halt climate change.

In a taped address to the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Brownback recently warned that cap-and-trade legislation in Congress would slap a family of four with a $1,500 annual increase in energy costs.

But as Media Matters points out, Brownback's $1,500 increase seems to have been pulled from thin air.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, for instance, says the net annual economy-wide cost of the cap-and-trade program in 2020 would be $22 billion -- or about $175 per household.

The CBO, incidentally, is a GOP-approved source of information, having made in recent weeks a gloomy assessment of the Congressional Democrats' ideas for reforming health care.

Brownback falsifies the menace of cap-and-trade using a weary-with-Washington tone. But he's not so weary he's going to let $700 million just wander off to Montana. Brownback closes his address with an assurance that Kansas lawmakers are working hard to ensure that Manhattan gets the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility. Brownback says Kansas won the competition for the facility "fair and square."
