I think we have all missed the point. The fact that an NFL player is more comfortable tweeting than having a conversation with his coach is telling. This isn't about trying to take ownership of a word in the slightest, it's about trying to stop the spread of hate-mongering by "respected" athletes by the use of slurs. He'd be (rightfully) punished in a similar manner if he'd used any other racial slur or an offensive remark against women. It's only your own homophobia that's stopping you from seeing why he should be punished here as well.
