This is pretty sad, in my opinion. It did not need to be renewed. It isn’t even expiring for almost a year and a half. If they waited until the next election it would still have another four months in effect (and we all know it would pass handily, so that’s not an issue).

From the “COMBAT Works!” site:

“If not renewed this year, collection of the tax will expire in less than 18 months (March 31, 2011).”

So, what’s the rush? I, you, and they all knew full well that this would pass with an overwhelming majority, so why do they need to renew it nearly a year and a half before it expires?

Unless maybe it’s because COMBAT is being audited, and they’re worried that public opinion – which is obviously overwhelmingly in support of COMBAT – might shift after the results of the audit are published.

I voted against it (despite fully expecting it to pass with an overwhelming majority) because (A) I wanted to see the audit, (B) it isn’t expiring anytime soon, and (C) then of course COMBAT would be on the next election ballot (still fully in effect) and we could renew it then if the audit shows that it does indeed work.

“COMBAT Works!” is a load of bull, anyway: COMBAT “works” because of a bunch of statistics that really just show that the police are DOING THEIR JOB. Kansas City pays high enough sales taxes; why do they need an extra sales tax to help the police do what they’re supposed to do anyway?
