LJ finds feet, runs 107 yards as a Bengal

Larry Johnson ran for 107 yards for the Bengals on Sunday.

What is it with former Kansas City pro sports players putting up great numbers as soon as they sign with other teams?

In his second game since being released by the Chiefs and signing with the Cincinnati Bengals, Larry Johnson ran for 107 yards in the Bengals' 16-7 win over the Browns. Johnson averaged 4.9 yards per carry on Sunday (he averaged 2.9 yards as a Chief). So much for LJ being "fourth string."

Johnson's talents re-emerged as soon as he tore off his KC jersey, following in the grand tradition set forth by athletes like Carlos Beltran (former Royal, traded to Houston, currently with the Mets), Johnny Damon (former Royal, traded to the A's, currently a Yankee) and Jared Allen (former Chief, current Viking and leading the NFL in sacks -- though he played well here, too).

In other former-Chiefs news, Amani Toomer, the veteran New York Giants wide receiver who signed on with the Chiefs only to be cut by the team after one month, told FoxSports.com that playing in Kansas City "felt like it wasn't pro football to me."

At this stage of his career, Toomer probably doesn't know what pro football looks like anymore. Meanwhile, LJ is starting to remember.

Butch says:

ummm, Carlos Beltran and Johnny Damon weren't cut due to performance either. They were cut because the Royals could no longer afford them.

Jarred Allen leads the league in sacks? What the hell are you talking about? Elvis Dumervil of the Denver Broncos has the most sacks, and he's been the league leader for almost the entire season.

Martin Kennedy says:

Chill out Elvis. Jaren Allen is the NFC leader in sacks, but he probably thinks he has the most sacks, tells everyone he has the most sacks and is but one DUI away from sacking groceries.

Carlos Beltran played great in Kansas City and won rookie of the year but except for his playoff run in Houston, NY Met fans are dissapointed in him. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, Angel Berroa also won the rookie of the year and he filled in for the Yankees earlier in the season at third while A-Rod dried out.

@Elvis-
He leads the NFC in sacks and is 2nd in the NFL overall. A minor oversight; it doesn't detract from the point of this post at all.

How 'bout this? The Chiefs entire roster has only 14 sacks; Allen alone has 12.5. His presence is the main reason the Vikes' defense leads the league with 40. He is arguably the highest-impact defensive player in the game.

Elvis says:

Just wait until I get to town on Sun. and sack your $60 mil qb 4 times. KC Queefs, haha.

Anyway, the best KC athlete to go onto better things was . . . Matt Stairs! Built like a softball player, he hit a huge home run in the 2008 NLCS for the Phillies, who of course won the world series that year.

See you at Arrowhead,

Elvis Dumervil(current NFL sack leader)

Shaun says:

Just to be fair, which the Pitch often forgets to do - NFL.com has listed the Browns as ranked 31 out of 32 in overall defense, giving up almost 400 yards per game.

Congrats Larry Johnson - you had a decent game against the worst defense in football. His replacement on the Chiefs, Jamaal Charles, behind a much worse offensive line and against a very tough defense, rushed 14 times for 93 yards. For all the math majors over at the pitch, thats 6.6 yards per carry. He also rushed for 103 in his first start post-LJ against the Raiders. Dont remember seeing a story about that??

And enough with bashing Jared Allen - ya the guy had a couple of DUIs - got in some trouble - and then got his mind right and is now playing at his highest level - shouldn't we be happy for him that he didnt fall off the cliff like so many other people we know with alcohol problems? I mean jesus christ people.....
