Monday Music Junkie: New Pornographers, Cake, Foo, Brian Wilson & More

Download column author Andy Vihstadt trolls the Internet for new music like a junkie with a $200-a-day habit, so we figured since he's doing it anyway, we'll try and convince him to share his findings. He agreed. The man's a true public servant. Enjoy.

Porn Challenge

Canada’s answer to the supergroup returns on Tuesday with Challengers, marking the fourth notch on the New Pornographers’ collective bedpost. If you’re a superfan, go here to order "The Executive Edition" which comes as a box set, including three extra discs of bonus material. Or, if you’re a cheapskate, head over to Chromewaves to download Neko Case doing Stevie Nicks.

Shame on you. Alright, here's the link.

Smells Like Cake

Scratch 'n sniff technology is grossly underused these days, so kudos to Cake for incorporating it into its limited-edition pressings of B-Sides and Rarities. Due in October and available in five scents (none of which will actually resemble cake), the compilation will deliver covers of songs by Barry White, Kenny Rogers and Black Sabbath.

Fix continues after the jump.

Youth a Go!-Go!

The Go! Team releases its sophomore round of aggressive cheerleading anthems next month. Download the first single, "Grip Like a Vice,” here and check out the video for “Doing it Right,” streaming at the group’s MySpace page.

Foo’s Fabulous Covers

The Foo Fighters’ Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace hits stores September 25. To be honest, I preferred the rough edges that came along with the first couple of LPs. The album title, frontman Dave Grohl's recent admission and first single, “The Pretender,” indicate those days are long gone. Nonetheless, Grohl & Co.’s cover of the Arcade Fire’s “Keep the Car Running” (link3) from BBC’s Live Lounge reaffirms that the Foo’s still like to ham it up.

Ether Madness

PJ Harvey isn’t the scary man-hater she once was; in fact, she’s gotten pretty tame lately. She wrote most of White Chalk (due September 24) on the piano, which might explain the subdued first single, “When Under Ether.” Let’s hope there’s at least a little grit on LP8.

Good Narrations

Brian Wilson is set to premier That Lucky Old Sun (A Narrative), at London’s Royal Festival Hall in three weeks. He says on his site that the project will “consist of five ‘rounds’ with interspersed spoken word.” Get a preview with “Midnight’s Another Day,” streaming here. (link)
