I hadn't even heard of Kansas City band Spidermums until a few days ago, but they get this week's Band Purple Heart, having lost a drummer to legal issues a week before going on tour.
Last Wednesday, drummer Justin Piatt was caught driving without a license. Piatt was still on probation for a prior drunk driving charge, but apparently he's had run-ins with the law before.
"Because this [driving without a license] is about his 10th offense [*], his lawyer said he's probably going to get 6 months in jail and another couple years added to his probation," explains Spidermums frontman Josh Thomas. "And he most definitely can't leave the state to tour."
[*wtf!!!]

According to the group's web site, "Spidermums is a new shoegazy indie rock band made up of former members of Bodisartha, The Girl is a Ghost, Grass Canon, and Pixel Panda."
Working without management or label, the band had booked its 14-date tour DIY style.
"He was really excited about going on tour," Thomas says, speaking for his fallen comrade. "This was a lot of work to plan, and now he can't even go."
But the band is soldiering ahead, having tapped Oscar Allen of Baby Birds Don't Drink Milk to fill in on drums. "It's really cool that Allen was able to come in and save the day," Thomas says.
