Q&A with the Rosebuds' Kelly Rosebud

On the Record with the Rosebuds
By ANDY VIHSTADT

Last week, I caught up with the better half of North Carolina’s favorite rock couple, the Rosebuds.

AV: You did a bit of stand-up in December. Does the old adage “Every rock star wants to be a comedian and every comedian dreams about being a rock star hold true?

Kelly Crisp: I have been doing it again and it's sometimes great and sometimes awful. It's taking a while to understand how to be one person on stage. It hit me in NY this past winter, "I never go anywhere without my boys!" For the last three or so years, I've had a group of men with me everywhere I go. So when I went to a comedy show alone, I just didn't know how to act. I wasn't performing that night and so it was even weirder. At least if you're performing, you can hide in the back or hang in the corner and look all intrepid and pretend to write important notes, but if you're just one person just at a place... I was way self-conscious. But I like being on stage and I like making people laugh.

Continue the interview and grab an MP3 after the jump.

AV: Let’s talk about Sweet Beats, Troubled Sleep [the Rosebuds' newest release, Night of the Furies, given remix treatment] and the people involved.

Crisp: Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) reconstructed "Get Up Get Out" and he helped us to record Night of the Furies so he was already all in it, but it was his remix that I feel like really showcased the sadness in the lyrics on this particular track by bringing the dance drums and the catchy chorus strings down and adding really ethereal, padded vocals.

Roger O'Donnell's remix of "I Better Run" really reminded me that I LOVE THE CURE, I LOVE ROGER O'DONNELL! It's clear now that it was his contributions that made Disintegration what it was to me. It's really strange to hear myself, my own voice, rebuilt in a Roger O'Donnell world.

You may know Mac from Portastatic, but you probably didn't know "Beach Mac" until his remix of "Silence by the Lakeside." He transformed it into a summer jam for lovers. And enemies.

AV: The Rosebuds are going back out on tour in a couple weeks.

Crisp: Most of the dates are with British Sea Power so I hope they're not dicks. I've heard they are "super nice" and I hope that's true. I hope they like nerds.

AV: Will the Blood & Love Tour CD be available?

Crisp: We do have a tour EP for this jam, but it's not the same one. We make them special for each tour and when they're gone, they're gone. They are our biggest seller (of all our records) so every time I think, "Damn! We should have made more of these!" but since they really are hand made, we can only do small batches. This time we'll probably have some new songs and things that are fun for us to do.

Grab the free album, Sweet Beat, Troubled Sleep (Night of the Furies Remixed), at Merge Records and one from the elusive Blood & Love below.
