Scene Snapshots: KC's Newest Cover Band

That head-swallowing afro wig, pink striped bathrobe and red Gibson SG belong to none other than Adam Stotts, frontman for the bands Overstep and the Lucky Graves and, most recently, Solid Gold Easy, a classic-rock-themed, three-piece cover band that played two sets this past Sunday night at Fred P. Ott's on the Plaza.

Joining Stotts are drummer/backup singer Mike Cochran (ex-Be/Non) and Austin Bell (ex-Vehicle).

I hadn't been to a Sunday show at P. Ott's in a long-ass time, but I found that little had changed: it's still $2, Marcy's still at the bar, and the crowd is still older, drunker and more rock-loving than just about any regular Sunday night in town.

What makes Solid Gold Easy different from any other cover band in town that puts on vintage clothes and plays songs you know and love? I'd say it's their choice of material. You could almost call SGE a classic-indie cover band. Alongside deeper FM staples like "Green River" and "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago," you'll hear familiar shit you probably didn't realize how much you loved, like the Beatles' "Dig a Pony" and Guided By Voices' "Glad Girls." They favor the raw, ragged, belt-it-out stuff. And T. Rex, too, that being the band's apparent chief source of inspiration.

Solid Gold set list:

1.
Slider - T. Rex
Green River - CCR
Rattlesnake Shake - Fleetwood Mac
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Dig a Pony - Beatles
Now I Wanna Be Your Dog - Stooges
Waiting on the Bus/Jesus Just Left - ZZ Top
Glad Girls - GBV
It's All Over Now - Rolling Stones
Suzie Q - CCR
Life's a Gas - T. Rex

2.
Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young
Jumping Jack Flash - Rolling Stones
Yer Blues - Beatles
Cinnamon Girl - Neil Young
I'm Waitin' for the Man - Velvet Underground
Cocaine - Eric Clapton
Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
Helter Skelter - Beatles
The Boys Are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
Remember - Jimi Hendrix
Manic Depression - Jimi Hendrix

You don't say... says:

"ex-be/non"?

That select group includes all of Lawrence and most of Kansas City.

Harper says:

Fack! What I should have mentioned is that Mike drums for the Irish pub rock band Flannigan's Righ Hook.

I was probably thinking of Be/Non because Adam and Mike were in the same incarnation of it -- the 29th or so.
