Chewbacca and the Naked Man Storm KC Live, with Super Black Market and the ACB's

By JASON HARPER

Yesterday evening at Power and Light started out tame enough, with the fantastic ACB's playing before a crowd of large-calved adults in shorts, many of them sitting on the steps 40 feet from the stage, few of them realizing how talented the band they were watching really was.

Because even people who seek out corporate entertainment in the form of shopping malls and handjobs in the bathroom at Circuit City know that a band playing a free show on a stage awash with flickering logos and advertisements isn't likely to be all that great. They're wrong, of course, about the ACB's, who could fill a Sprint Center or two with their sharp guitar hooks and celestial harmonies. A couple of hipsters danced down front, bare, in the open, exposed, for a song or two, and two sorrority girls photographed the band's not unhandsome front man, Konnor Ervin, but other than that and polite applause, and though the crowd grew steadily, nothing really wild happened.

When Super Black Market took the stage, it became a different story.

Their set started with SBM in their usual, over-rocking, we'll-make-your-ass-dance-to-the-death-beat style, playing loud and calling for witnesses. If anything, they seemed a little tired from the heat.

And then the back doors opened and, well ... words cannot describe the eye-humping spectacle of seeing Chewbacca and the Naked Man, SBM's official freak squad.

A friend to whom I showed the video said, "This may be the stupidest thing I've ever seen," and likened the Naked Man to someone who has some kind of autism that involves intense exercise. That only made me love them more, of course. Here's to sick senses of humor!

No, your friend was right... says:

That was really fucking stupid.

are u sleeping with the ACB's says:

Amazing the same attributes you get on your knees for the ACB's are the same attributes you use to rail on other local bands...

Harmony's and hooks by others get the usual derisive Pitch bullshit...

And add me to the list of people that think that was fucking stupid..

when it's done right... says:

the acb's do pop music right, unlike the other "pop" band in this town filled with old men trying to be the cure. the naked guy/chewbacca thing came off as nothing more than a cheap ploy for attention by a band that while talented, was really pretty lame and way too scene. all style, not much substance

anonymous says:

Super Black Market sucked as a band to begin with. Then their disgusting side act really put to shame the fine job that the P&L district is doing with their weeknight concerts.

yrrab says:

Boy, you guys are a bunch of killjoys. This is the first time I ever wish I had been at POwer and Light, This looks great.

HEY!! Back off! I like Dark Circles!- Love, Billy Smith

the abcdefg's were super weak sauce, first of all. let's not forget who they blew for the deep throat and ultra-icey cover on your rag. super black market is the only BAND that will ever play the power and shit district. chewbacca and "naked guy" were the greatest celebrity appearance since efran ramirez. FUCK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

bigbaby says:

Wow Mr. Harper, two sentences to decribe how Super Black Market played? You are an incredible writer. I smell a Pulitzer Prize.

Who pays you? says:

I am so tired of reading these articles, but I will tend to read just to see who your "it" band is. Jason you focus to much attention on select bands. As a buyer of local music I will tell you the acb's are talented...I bought their record and still listen to it. But there must be some reason why they have went two years after the release of their disc and not signed a deal. They are just now getting attention from you and your bias magazine.....why wait so long if its so great? Whereas you ignored them early why your head was shoved so far up the ass of the republic tigers. There are other bands in town who write some excellent music. Keep following the crowds and you will stay a writer for the Pitch instead of a credible magazine

Haley McGee (Army Fiancee :D) says:

Ok they do this at every show, you guys really have no life, to seriously make a hate blog. Thats stupid. Let people live and if you dont like it, dont listen to their music, dont go see them.

robert moore says:

Both bands are solid, though I wish they hadn't given the White Power & Flight district their time and rock and roll energy.

to force a mentally challenged individual to strip down, run around while wearing a tattered pair of panty hose on his noggin, that ain't right neither. damn emo sceners. white power.

John Ferguson says:

Once again, (and not surprisingly,) you guys are willing to trash the Pitch at the drop of ANY hat, yet provide no alternative. What's the real problem here? Your position is just a little too easy, if you ask me. I have mixed feelings about certain elements of the Pitch, but as far as music editors go, Jason is top- notch in my book. After all, does anyone but me remember the last guy?

That said, I blow him every chance I get. He's a magician with scented oils...

Love,
John
