Bluesday Tuesday Report: IBC results, Cruisin' and why you need to go to Knuckleheads

The returns are in: No love for King King. The Kansas City Blues Society's pick to compete in the 25th Annual International Blues Competition came up short as the South Florida Blues Society entrants JP Soars and the Red Hots took the best band category.

Note: JP Soars also took home the Best Guitarist award. Checking out his myspace page, you will find that JP Soars also dips in metal.

Getting more attention was Trampled Under Foot's Nick Schnebelen, 2008's Albert King Award/Best Guitarist winner, who was awarded a customized left-handed Gibson to replace the one he received last year. Presenting the award were Sean Carney (2007 Albert King winner) and Zac Harmon (leader of 2004's Best Unsigned Band).

In other news, the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise rolled into port in Fort Lauderdale, two Saturdays ago. Finishing up with a lineup that consisted of Ana Popovic, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Bob Margolin, the "World's Only Fully Chartered Blues Cruise," operated by Roger Naber, seemed to be a success.

But with a scene like this, how could it not have been?

Knuckleheads wants you to come hang out on Wednesday nights. On hump day, the East Bottoms saloon hosts Gospel Lounge with Carl Butler on the stage in back behind the bathrooms at 7:30 p.m.

"It's kind of gospel blues jam with bass and keyboards," according to "Wild" Bill O'Connor, Knuckleheads webmaster and KKFI DJ.

For those who can't/don't wanna give an "Amen," the main stage now has movies from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This week, check out Streets of Fire, a musical-action-comedy-drama. It goes well with the specials on retro can beers, wells, 16 oz. draws and hot dogs. Your date will be totally impressed with your hip and frugal sensibilities.

After that is over, the music begins. Knuckleheads has a rotating residency Wednesday nights with these artists:

1st Wednesday of the month: Brother Bagman

2nd Wednesday of the month: Fast Johnny Ricker

3rd Wednesday of the month: Miss Major and her Minor Mood Swings

4th Wednesday of the month: Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders

On the 5th Wednesday, you should rest.
