Tonight: Out-rockin' music from Oregon at the Record Bar
After you get your eyes peeled off at the Tivoli by the Ssion's Boy premiere, head down to the Record Bar and seal the deal with a trifecta of weirdity, courtesy of a local drone master and a couple of Oregon kooks. Who knows, perhaps fellow Beaver Staters the Dandy Warhols will drop by after their show at the Beaumont? (We make zero promises.)

Hey, Dan, wake up, we're in KC, man.
Starting at 10 p.m., former Kansas Citian Dan Jones, now a cult indie figure in his current home of Eugene gets up for a short solo set. With his band, the Squids, Jones has shared bills with the likes of Dinosaur Jr., John Doe, the Minus 5, Mike Watt and more -- and he's got the sound to match: a catchy distillation of '90s underground alt and pop punk. He's also got some deep local roots. Says Record Bar co-owner and local musician Steve Tulipana:
Dan and I were in our first band together in High School and he happens to be in town for a visit. Def. an odd one to be on the bill but his Neil Young meets Bob Mould songwriting/storytelling is sure to entertain. Side note: our first band's name was THE CORNDOG JAMBOREE. We wanted to be The Minutemen bad but, well, we sucked.
Stream some songs at DanJonesmusic.com. The first one up now, "My Banana," mentions the Royals, who truly are a corndog jamboree.
At 10:30, local experimental drone guitarist Andrew Plante gets his delay on. As we reported back in July, Plante is part of a burgeoning drone scene that includes fellow one-man acts Expo '70 and Sounding the Deep. Expo, aka Justin Wright, recently started his own label, Sonic Meditations, which does all or most of its releases on cassette.
Bryony McIntire Arrington has experimentals to show you.
Last but not least, at a quarter to midnight, Arrington di Dionyso of Portland's K Records band Old Time Relijun, will perform an experimental vocal piece. Says di Dionyso: "Audiences can experience this set as a profoundly transformative experience. Or...they could just think it sounds like a lot of noise and walk away. Sort of depends on how it's marketed."
We recommend marketing it as A REJUVENATING AGE-DEFYING BODY SCRUB. BETTER THAN A DAY IN THE SPA!
Feel free to use that next time, Arrington. Or just call your band "Corndog Jamboree."
Show is 21+, $7 to get in.
